The big change to the tone of the amp will be in the cap mod.
FENDER MUSICMASTER BASS AMP MODS MOD
This mod will lower the 60 hz hum that the amp makes also. I wouldn't go through the trouble of building a new speaker cabinet when you already have another bass rig should you need to get louder. It was pretty small sounding on bass but had a nice fuzzy break-up around 3 or 4 on the volume knob that really responded to how hard you played. maybe 8', script Fs on the knobs, no on/off knob, and it appeared to have smaller tubes. You can do this at any of the tube sockets where its easy to get near a point to solder them to ground.Ī good spot would be at one of the output tubes as they already have there pin 8 going to ground right near by, all you need to do is unground that one wire and solder a resistor from a 6v6s pin 7 to ground at pin 8, and the do the same thing at pin 2. The first had a smaller cabinet (open back) and speaker. One definite circuit change I would make is to un ground the filament string and then solder on a 100 ohm 1/2 watt resistor to each of the 6.3 volt feed wires ( likely to be green colored) and the ground the other end of each resistor. Its not either of the Transformers, so do not sweat that. I would replace without question all the filters at this point with Ruby brand, F&T ,or blue cased Atom caps and know that at least that's out of the way and the amp will sound better for it! In fact I have filters out of 70s Marshalls, Hiwatts, Fenders and other amps that are leaking out crap and or swelling up at the pressure release plug AND THEY STILL TEST GOOD FOR LOW ESR!!!! so nothing is cut in stone without the meter test! The first had a smaller cabinet (open back) and speaker. Then I saw another one, cheaper, and noticably different.

In the end I think the MusicMaster has a def 'cool factor' compared to the Jr. I had my eye on one of these at the local shop but it was too expensive.

The MM is a fun amp but it is what it is. Configuration: Combo Controls: Silver, forward facing w/ blue labels Knobs: 1-10 Skirted Knobs Schematics Musicmaster Bass Musicmaster Bass 6AQ5 Faceplate Front: In, In, Vol/Power Sw. Unless you have a Cap ESR meter to use in regards to checking the power supply filters / caps, there is no surefire way to know if they are good or not! Heres me and mine (70 bass + 70 in a new pickup/pots/knobs) So, unless you can get the Musicmaster in the much more doable 400-500 range, its not worth it unless youre a collector. 'Vintage' Fender amps look and sound cool for the most part and are def fun to have around.
